Comment: We must resist the money

The phone and fax machine at COMS will be ‘red hot’ as everyone scrambles to bring in new recruits for the start of the season.

Chelsea are sure to be first in line to hand City and Shaun Wright-Phillips an offer they will find hard to resist, while Arsenal will certainly be monitoring his situation.

Sylvain Distin is another who could attract some fevered bidding, with Everton and Villa already showing an interest.

But if these star players are allowed to leave it will almost be inevitable that the ‘bad old days’ will return with a vengeance.

If these two are happy, why sell?

What we don’t need at City is to sell our biggest assets. It’s been well documented that we have £60m of debt, but we must resist any offers.

I’m sure if we look at what has been done at Bolton, we could the same, hopefully even better. What has been achieved over at the Reebok is a credit to all involved. If we were to follow suit, bring in the odd freebie and supplement the squad with some of our excellent developing youngsters, in time we could get the bank balance looking a lot more healthy than it is at present.

Give more time to the youth set-up, it will definitely pay dividends with players coming through each season, as we’ve seen last term.

Letting players like Stephen Elliott go is just poor business. He was let go to Sunderland as his first-team chances at City were blocked by players who now, just 12 months on, are no longer with us.

I’m looking forward to the new season but just hope we still have Shaun and Sylvain at the Blue Camp when it finally gets started.
