Vass tipped for World Cup spot

The former Villa striker's form has led to calls for a recall to the England squad - Vassell has already got 22 caps, scoring 6 goals - and Pearce is leading the campaign.

"If he plays like he did on Sunday and plays like he did against Aston Villa, I think it would be impossible to keep him out of the squad," Pearce told Sky Sports News.

"He has got to try and get to those standards and maintain them. If he did that over a consistent period it'd be good."

England coach Sven Goran Eriksson is expected to pick four strikers, with Owen and Rooney guaranteed to start if fit, and Crouch, Defoe and Bent also providing opposition for Vass.

But Pearce added: "I can't see four people consistently offering more than what he's given us over those two games that's for sure."
