Update on Kevin De Bruyne's ankle injury

Manchester City will treat and monitor their star playmaker Kevin De Bruyne with 'caution' in order not to aggravate the ankle injury he sustained playing for Belgium at Euro 2020.

The midfielder was hurt in his nation's 1-0 victory over Portugal in the round of 16 when he was hacked down by Joao Palhinha just before half-time.

The 30-year-old was able to report for pre-season duty last week, though admitted he was still feeling pain in the ankle. As a result, The Times report that Manchester City sent their star to Barcelona to visit the club's doctor, Ramon Cugat, where he underwent a scan.

Cugat confirmed that De Bruyne was safe to resume training with the squad on Monday, although that precautions should be taken as to prevent long-term damage from occurring and that the ankle should be closely monitored for any swelling.

The Times also confirmed that any further damage to the ankle ligaments could result in surgery for the 30-year-old - a measure that would keep him out of action for several months.

Pep Guardiola also has Phil Foden in his list of concerns. It was reported on Monday morning that the 21-year-old is expected to be forced out of the first month of the 2021/22 season - which will include at least three Premier League fixtures - through injury.

Foden is still nursing a knock to the foot he picked up while on England duty at Euro 2020 - an injury that kept him out of the final.

It is considered an 'unusual' injury, forcing City to be extremely careful in his recovery and make sure they do not bring him back to action before he has completely and suitably recovered.
