Update on Fernandinho's Future Amid Man City Contract Negotiations

Manchester City are confident that midfielder Fernandinho will extend his contract with the club before the end of the season, according to reports.

The Brazilian has been a key part of Pep Guardiola's back-to-back Premier League title winning sides, and has already made 17 appearance in the league this season.

His contract is set to expire in June though, meaning that City could lose the 34 year-old on a free at the end of the season.

However, according to reports from Sky Sports, the club are confident of securing the services of the versatile Brazilian for at least another year.

There had been some fears that he could be on his way out of the club, after Riyad Mahrez suggested as much in an interview with Sky Sports.

When taking part in a game of quick fire questions with his teammate Benjamin Mendy the Algerian was asked: "Who announced in the summer that this will be their final season at City?"

Mahrez immediately responded by saying David Silva - who has already announced that this season will be his last at the Etihad - and Fernandinho, who had not yet announced a decision on his future.

Mendy's uncharacteristically timid reaction to the winger's answer led many to believe the three time Premier League winner might also be on his way, but it appears now that he is expected to sign on for one more season.

Fernandinho joined Manchester City from Shakhtar Donetsk back in 2013 for a fee believed to be in the region of £35m.

He has since gone on to establish himself as a nailed on started in either midfield or defence for City, winning nine trophies along the way.

The one trophy he has not won however, is the Champions League and with Liverpool 14 points clear at the top of the Premier League table already, it appears as though this will now be the primary focus for the Citizens.

They face Real Madrid in a difficult second round tie, travelling to the Bernabeu in February, before hosting Los Blancos at the Eithad in March.
