Shaun Wright-Phillips is set to have surgery on the painful knee injury that has kept him out of the City side.

SWP hasn't figured since the 3-1 UEFA Cup defeat at Hamburg and manager Mark Hughes confirmed SWP had trained earlier in the week but had a reaction and will now face surgery. The injury is will also keep the winger out of England's two World Cup qualifiers.

Meanwhile Hughes is reported to be chasing Aston Villa striker John Carew after cooling his interest in Roque Santa Cruz. City have struggled for goals at times, with injury to Craig Bellamy and Valeri Bojinov only just returning to the first team. Carew's future has been in doubt since Villa signed Emile Heskey from Wigan.
