Schmeichel takes parting shot

The big Dane, who is to hang up his gloves at the end of the season, feels big name players may be put off signing for City because of the battles at boardroom level.

“Behind the scenes at City has not been good for forty-odd years,” Schmeichel said.

“I don’t know what it is, the power struggle, the knifing in the back. It just seems to stick to City and when I came I thought: ‘Hold on, things have changed’.

“For a player to come to a club, there are certain things he needs to see.

“Can these people pay my wages? Will these people sell me halfway through the contract? For the players who want to come to Manchester City, it is so important to get that side of the club stabilised.”
