The Danish keeper's current deal runs out in the summer but City boss Kevin Keegan has already said that the his 39-year-old stopper can have another deal if he wants one.

"There are two reasons why I came to City. I wanted to play for Kevin Keegan and we wanted to move back into the area," said Schmeichel.

"It is always exciting to be part of something that is going forward. I don't think I would have liked to play for Manchester City four years ago.

"All the time I have known about this club, the best thing has been the supporters. The club has been turned around. We are waiting to move to a new stadium and we have a fantastic training ground.

"This place is going forward. We have a manager who wants to take the team into the top six."
