The former Arsenal midfielder is expected to return to England for treatment but what will worry City fans is the revelation that it is a long-term problem.

Nasri told French television: 'I have a problem in my knee since the Villarreal match. It's an old issue which is resurfacing.'

A spokesperson for the French FA revealed: 'The hospital examination as well as complementary examinations confirmed the inflammation and as a result itwas plainly clear the player would not be fit to play.'

Nasri played in Man City's 2-1 win over Villarreal in the Champions League last week but manager Roberto Mancini left him on the bench for the 3-2 win against Queens Park Rangers last weekend in the Premier League.

Franch coach Laurent Blanc said: 'It is a tricky one that he picked up while playing for Arsenal.'

Blanc has delayed naming his squad with injury concerns also hovering over midfielders Yohan Cabaye and Florent Malouda.

Newcastle's Cabaye underwent a scan on Monday to determine the seriousness of a groin problem and Chelsea midfielder Malouda has a thigh injury.
