RB Leipzig Want Permanent Deal for Manchester City Loan Player Angeliño

RB Leipzig head coach Julian Nagelsmann has revealed that the club would like to sign Manchester City full-back Angeliño on a permanent deal after impressing since arriving on loan.

City triggered a buy-back clause to re-sign Angeliño from PSV Eindhoven last summer to serve as additional left-back cover while Benjamin Mendy recovered from injury. But the Spaniard had become surplus to requirements by January and was allowed to join Leipzig.

The 23-year-old has started every game since making his debut against Bayern Munich in early February, including Leipzig’s 1-0 Champions League over Tottenham in London.

Even just six games into his Leipzig career, Nagelsmann is already keen to have him beyond the end of the season, praising the way Angeliño has so quickly adapted to the club’s tactical system and ‘intuitively does a lot of things right’.

The issue for Leipzig could be the price, with Angeliño's loan deal reported by German publication Kicker to include a €20m (£17.4m) option to buy.

“He has a hefty price tag,” Nagelsmann commented on the matter. “We first have to see what is in our wallet and whether the player and the selling club want to play along.”

Selling for €20m would represent a significant profit for City, having re-signed the player from PSV for a little over £5m less than a year ago.

Angelino has played in a more advanced role for Leipzig than that of an orthodox left-back, flanking a back three as an attacking wing-back. Nagelsmann has been full of praise for his attacking ability, although the coach is not fully convinced about the player’s defensive strength.

City are still yet to see the best of Mendy since he was signed for £52m in 2018. Two long-term injuries have hampered the Frenchman, who has shared duties with Oleksandr Zinchenko in recent weeks. It was the Ukrainian who started the Carabao Cup final on Sunday.
