Player of the Day- Vincent Kompany
Updated Monday, 2nd July 2012
Belgium and Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has been chosen to be our first ?Player of the Day?. Kompany played a crucial role in securing Man City?s first Premier League title since the 1967-1968 season.
The gifted centre back was transferred to Man City in 2008 for a fee of around 6 million pounds from the German club Hamburger SV.
Kompany made his debut for the club against West Ham on the 28th September 2008 and gained the number 4 shirt for the 2010-2011 season after Nedum Onuoha went on loan to Sunderland.
Kompany captained Man City in the FA Cup Semi Final against Manchester United, in which Man City won 1-0 and went on to win the FA Cup for the first time since 1969. After that victory, and a good season for Kompany, Man City manager Roberto Mancini made him permanent captain, and it was only going to get better for Kompany as he was than featured in the 2010-2011 PFA Team of the Year.
Kompany has made 127 appearances for Man City, and scored 6 goals to date.
Kompany made his international debut for Belgium in February 2004 against France, at the age of just 17; he was one of the youngest international players ever. The Belgium federation called Kompany up for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, but his club side Hamburger would only let him go for two group stage matches.
His first match against Brazil ended with him being red carded, which effectively ended his Olympics as he would get a match ban for the second game.
Kompany decided to stay out in Beijing for the 3rd game without permission from Hamburger, to help his team qualify, which led to an unsteady relationship with him and the club.
This was said to be a major factor of the reason why he moved to Manchester City shortly after the Olympics. Kompany was made Belgium captain on the 10th November 2011, succeeding Arsenal centre back Thomas Vermaelen.
Kompany has made 47 appearances for Belgium and scored 2 goals.
