Pep Guardiola issues Phil Foden injury update

Pep Guardiola has revealed that Phil Foden was taken off as a 'precaution' during Man City's 2-1 defeat to RB Leipzig on Tuesday night.

Foden has only just returned to action following an ankle knock, and he was dealt another blow part way through his side's final Champions League game of the season.

The England international was replaced by Raheem Sterling at half time in midweek, with Guardiola explaining the switch in his post-match press conference.

"Phil had problems in the beginning of the game with his ankle. He struggled a little bit so he was taken off as a precaution and we put Raheem in his position."

Foden has suffered several fitness issues this season, missing the first four games of the Premier League campaign with a foot problem before being struck down by an ankle injury picked up with England more recently.

When he has played, the 21-year-old has produced some terrific performances, registering five goals and six assists from 16 appearances.

He was not the only injury concern coming out of the game either. Nathan Ake also picked up a knock with Guardiola revealing: "Nathan has a problem with his back - we will see tomorrow."

City were far from convincing in their defeat to Leipzig, although Guardiola did rotate his squad significantly. Starting centre-backs Ruben Dias and Aymeric Laporte were both given a rest, as were Rodri, Ederson and Joao Cancelo.

City also lost Kyle Walker to a red card towards the end after the right-back needlessly went through the back of Andre Silva.

It is not yet certain if Foden will be in contention for City's next game - a Premier League meeting with Wolves on Saturday. Guardiola will likely provide an update in his pre-match press conference.
