Pep Guardiola defends Jack Grealish cameo in Community Shield defeat

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has urged fans not to overreact to new signing Jack Grealish's underwhelming cameo in Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Leicester in the Community Shield.

Days after completing his £100m move from Aston Villa, Grealish came off the bench for the final 25 minutes of the match, but he didn't make the biggest impact and could not prevent City from falling to defeat.

After the game, Guardiola warned fans they must be patient with Grealish, who he insisted is still getting used to his new surroundings.

"Jack was really good," he told his post-match press conference. "Aggressive, going against full-backs and having three players around him every time he had the ball.

"He will find the tempo, he will get to know his new team-mates, we will get to know him, and step by step, he will find his best form.

"We just need to provide for him and let him express his quality. He didn't come for 25 minutes, he came for five or six years."

Patience was a key part of Guardiola's message as the boss stressed his side were nowhere near full strength, having been without a number of senior players whose summers dragged on because of international duty with the likes of England and Brazil.

"How can we be ready when the players are training three or four sessions?" he continued. "I would love to have the Brazilian guys and the English players. But they finished the season three weeks ago, so they have to rest.

"It’s just 'adapt, adapt, adapt'. That’s what we did last season when we started a little bit flat in terms of results.

"But after a while, we were there and started to win. With what I saw today I’m incredibly confident that many good things are going to happen this season."
