Manchester City to confirm Julian Alvarez signing

Manchester City are set to confirm the signing of Argentine starlet Julian Alvarez, 90min understands.

We revealed earlier this month that City had won the race to land Alvarez - considered one of the best young players in world football.

The 21-year-old forward, who can play centrally or out wide, is already a full international and is expected to be part of the Argentina squad for their World Cup campaign.

We confirmed that a deal of around £20m had been agreed and this is set to be concluded, with local taxes and fees now needed to be paid by River.

The deal is around the player's release clause which was in place, so River could not realistically demand anything more in way of a transfer fee, but the two clubs have reached their own agreement.

The transfer will see Alvarez remain at River until the summer, but we are told by sources that the Argentine side are hoping that an additional clause can be inserted that would see the player stay for their prospective Copa Libertadores campaign which could run until October.

Should Alvarez remain at River, he would then be due in England around Christmas, but this will depend on his World Cup participation.

Man City boss Pep Guardiola was asked about the prospective arrival of Alvarez during his press conference following their weekend draw with Southampton, but he offered little insight.

"I don't have any info about the club, anything. Not one word. I don't know anything. I don't have any info about the club," he insisted.
