Man City set to offer Rodri new contract

Manchester City midfielder Rodri is in line for a new contract at the Etihad Stadium that would take his stay beyond the expiry of his current deal in 2024.

Having taken some time to adapt to the demands of the Premier League after joining in the summer of 2019, the Spain international has quietly developed into one of the finest ball-playing defensive midfielders in the division.

Rodri is now among the first names on Guardiola's team sheet and has already made 32 appearances in all competitions this season, even contributing three goals and an assist from the base of midfield.

The 25-year-old's importance is reflected in the fact that he is the midfielder with the most successful passes in the top flight at the time of writing (2,087), with his metronomic distribution the foundation for so many Man City attacks.

Rodri's current contract is set to expire in June 2024, and according to The Telegraph the Cityzens are set to look at renewing his terms and tying him down for the long-term.

The Spaniard would be the latest in a string of contract renewals at the club this season, with Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo, Ederson and John Stones all recently committing their futures.

Meanwhile, City are also on the lookout for a replacement for Rodri's fellow defensive midfielder Fernandinho.

The Brazilian veteran has been used more sparingly this season and is yet to reveal his plans beyond the summer when his one-year deal expires. The 36-year-old could yet stay for a further year, but City may dip into the transfer market if the right option becomes available.

Monaco's coveted midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni as been touted as a potential option. The France international is also a target for Chelsea, as previously revealed by 90min.
