Macca to play father figure for City youngsters

"I see part of my role here as helping the youngsters, I certainly hope so," the new midfielder told the City website.

"I have to admit, nowadays I am one of the older members of the squad and if anything the most experienced.

"I have played in possibly every type of football match you could experience so if anybody needs to speak to me I will be the first to help out the young lads and talk to them."

Most prominent of those are Lee Croft, scorer for the reserves last night, and Joey Barton.

Barton's stock has risen dramatically over the last few weeks due to his strike at Blackburn and his England breakthough.

"I think the last few days have been successful and maybe David Platt and his staff have seen that I could be the heartbeat of this side", he told mcfc.co.uk.

However, he won't get a chance in the final, irrelevant qualifier, due to suspension, and will miss the Euro finals. But he can console himself in the fact he has finalised a new deal.

A 2 year contract has been signed which can be renegotiated in 7 months if Barton maintains his form and remains in the first team.
