Leroy Sane Returns to Full Manchester City Training After Long-Term Knee Injury

Manchester City winger Leroy Sane has returned to full training for the first time after spending close to six months out of action with a serious knee injury.

Sane suffered ACL damage in the opening stages of the Community Shield against Liverpool at Wembley back in early August. The German star made his return to light training in December and has now re-joined the rest of the squad.

City are preparing to face Manchester United in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final on Wednesday night, but it is likely that Sane will need more time to work on his match fitness before he is involved in his first game back.

Possible involvement on 22 February against Leicester following City’s winter break is not an unreasonable prediction for when fans can expect to see him play.

But whether Sane, a two-time Premier League champion, will remain a City player beyond the end of the season remains to be seen amid longstanding interest from Bayern Munich.

90min reported as far back as July, before his injury, that Sane is ‘open’ to joining Bayern. It would represent a return home to Germany and the appeal to the player comes from the major role Bayern could offer him, compared to City, where he wasn’t an automatic starter last season.

Largely competing with Raheem Sterling on City’s left flank, he started just 21 Premier League games en-route to the title last season. Sane’s current City deal also only runs for another 18 months until 2021, leaving the club vulnerable to offers from Bayern and other suitors.

Bayern have made no secret of their interest in Sane and chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has refused to rule out a fresh approach now that he is returning to fitness.

“If we are still interested in principle, which I do not rule out, we will first talk to [City] in order to create a friendly atmosphere of conversation,” Rummenigge told the German media.
