Keegan: We didn't have enough soldiers

Keegan, who has spent more than £30million during his 18 months at Maine Road, feels the side side lack the quality to make a name for themselves in the top flight.

"This result tells the board that we are nowhere near my ambitions," he said.

"We are only two or three players away from what I am looking for but I need to know what is available, so I know what I can go for."

"It was an after-the-Lord Mayor's show-type performance. If we had been a top side we would have won that game, but we are not a top side. We have some very good footballers, but not enough.

"It is about turning up every week. We told the players before the game that if they just thought they had to show up, if they were complacent in any way, Charlton would have us. We didn't have enough soldiers.

"There wasn't quite the effort from last week, there wasn't the same commitment. That happens in football. How did Manchester United lose here last week then beat Bayer Leverkusen?"
