Keegan: The first half was x-rated stuff

City were ripped apart by the Saints and had it not been for goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel the 2-0 scoreline could have been far worse.

“You could make all sorts of excuses, but for me, my staff, my players and the supporters it wasn’t good enough and the buck has to stop with me,’’ Keegan admitted.

“I don’t know what we have done wrong in training this week but I certainly never expected a performance like that. Apart from Peter Schemichel, I don’t think there were too many players who came out with any credit.

“I said after the West Brom game, when we lost 4-0 a year ago, that I didn’t think a side of mine could play that bad but it has happened again. It could easily have been four or five and Southampton had everything we didn’t.

“They had drive and determination. We didn’t and it saddens me to say it. I’ll have a good look at myself and think its over but I won't be washing my dirty linen in public. The players know exactly how I feel and they owe us one.’’

“The first half was x-rated stuff and even got to the point when nobody could be bothered to go out and mark at short corners. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing."
