John Stones Facing Manchester City Axe as Pep Guardiola Draws Up 3-Man Defensive Shortlist

Manchester City defender John Stones is apparently at risk of being sold this summer, with manager Pep Guardiola eager to bring two new centre backs to the club at the end of the season.

The reigning Premier League champions don't want to make wholesale changes, but Guardiola has prioritised signing two new defenders as Manchester City have already conceded more goals this season than in the entirety of last year's campaign.

Signing a new forward will also be on the cards if Leroy Sané completes his move to Bayern Munich, but The Times warns Stones could be on the chopping block for Manchester City once the summer transfer window opens.

Stones, as well as Nicolás Otamendi, are most at risk of being moved on at the end of the season as Guardiola wants to help finance a move for two of his three transfer targets ahead of the 2020/21 Premier League season.

90min exclusively revealed Manchester City were among a group of sides who held an interest in Villarreal centre back Pau Torres, and The Times confirm the 23-year-old is still a target for Guardiola ahead of the summer transfer window.

Inter's Milan Škriniar and Brighton centre back Lewis Dunk are also on Guardiola's shortlist.

Benfica's Rúben Dias is also named as a possible target for Manchester City - who, as revealed by 90min, were considering making a bid for the Portugal international during the January transfer window.

For Stones, a move away from Manchester City likely won't just be as a result of Guardiola's transfer plans for the summer.

After being left out of their match against Tottenham Hotspur, Guardiola confirmed that Stones' absence wasn't related to an injury. Instead, the City boss said he wanted to give a spot in the first team to teenager Eric García.

"No, he’s not injured," Guardiola confirmed. "I decided to bring Eric. Eric has played so good, so I brought him."
