“There’s not a team, there’s a big squad of players here, there are a lot of players and we’re all contributing and that’s important,” said Navas.

“There’s a lot of competition [for places]. We’ve won one trophy but we have to carry on working in the same way and keep persevering.”

Navas paid tribute to Pellegrini’s influence in keeping City in the hunt for four trophies and said: “It’s his way of working, his integrity, his ability to get the best out of every player in every game, that’s the key thing.

“He knows what the team needs at every moment and especially how to use the football, and that’s

important for us. We need to keep calm, we know what every game means and have to keep working hard.”

And skipper Vincent Kompany said: “It was great to win that first trophy of the season with the Capital Cup success at Wembley, we have made history again.

“But there is just so much more to play for this season, we cannot possibly call it a day with that one trophy and be happy with that.”
