Former Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has hit out at big spending clubs Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, insisting ‘s****y money’ will not guarantee success at the highest level.
City and PSG have assembled the most expensive squads in world football following high profile Abu Dhabi and Qatar takeovers respectively a decade or more ago. The pair have dominated their domestic leagues in recent seasons, although the Champions League has remained elusive.
A PSG side complete with the two most expensive players in history were losing finalists to Bayern in 2020, while City were beaten by Chelsea in the 2021 final six months ago.
Hoeness, who spent his whole playing career at Bayern in the 1970s and has served the club ever since retiring in 1979 – including two spells as president, said he is still ‘very happy’ whenever the German giants beat either PSG or City.
“So far, these two clubs have not won anything. Nothing at all. They will lose to us again. Not always, but from time to time. That should be our goal,” Hoeness told the 11 Leben podcast.
“When we beat them, that makes me very happy. Show them: Your s****y money is not enough.”
Hoeness even took a personal dig at PSG chief Nasser Al-Khelaifi, questioning how much the former professional tennis player actually enjoys football and criticising the source of his wealth.
“I don't know if he likes football,” Hoeness quipped. “The difference between him and I? I worked hard to earn my money and he received it as a gift.”
Hoeness himself served 18 months in prison from 2014 after admitting evading €28.5m in taxes.
