Dunney sounds rallying call

The Blues defender will be playing in his first derby as City captain and he aims to become the first City skipper to lead his side to victory at Old Trafford since 1974.

But having only been beaten once in our last 5 league trips across town, Dunne is confident we can come away with a win.

"Every time the derby comes around, we are reminded that it is 30-odd years since we won at Old Trafford," he told the Mancheser Evening News.

"Their fans sing about it and there is no doubt it would be nice to lead a side that came away from there with the points.

"The last 3 or 4 years we have certainly matched them at their place. We have always gone with a game plan and last year we were a little bit unfortunate not to nick it in the end."

Dunney believes having barely any local lads in the team does not mean the City players aren't aware of the game's significance.

"There is nothing else you can do but be up for the derby, because it is such a challenging task," he said.

"It is such a big high if you get something out of it and at the same time we know that if we do not perform, we could get hammered.

"We want to go there and make our fans proud of us and produce something that will please them and us.

"The passion is incredible. The whole spirit and atmosphere starts in the stands and works its way on to the pitch.

"We know when the teams are called out we won't hear our names because booing will drown them out. That's when you realise you are not just in a battle with 11 United players but that there are 70,000 others who can't wait to get on your back."

Despite a disappointing 0-0 draw at home to Watford on Monday, Dunney reckons City should take confidence from last week's excellent 3-1 win at Villa.

"We have to be strong, steely and determined and combine that with the football we played at Villa," he added. "If we can do that, we can make sure it is a difficult afternoon for United and their fans.

"We are one of the few teams to have been to Old Trafford and regularly come from a goal down to get something.

"We have hit form at the right time and we go into the game with confidence. We fancy our chances, we know it will be very hard, but it is not a game we are going into trying to keep the score down. We genuinely feel we can win there."
