The French defender was handed the skipper's armband before the start of last season and will continue to lead the side despite a disappointing campaign for both the team and himself.
"Sylvain will be captain again this season - he is the right person to lead us," manager Kevin Keegan told the City website.
"Last year was a tough grounding for him and I think he will improve because of it.
"By his standards he was not at his best last year but the one thing he never did was to give up. He kept going and is still my idea of a captain."
