The 27-year-old, like many others before him, has lamented City’s inconsistency this season – taking four points off runaway leaders Chelsea but just one off bottom-club West Brom.
The former Leeds right-back also despaired over the bad luck City have had with injuries, but he believes that the players City still have fit are capable of sneaking into a UEFA Cup spot.
“It's easy to look at the negatives and say, 'we haven't done this or that'," the former England man told the official City website.
"But we are still 11th in the table and if we can string a few results together now, it could push us right back into the mix.
"I think everyone will be generally happy if we can do that and we would be delighted if we could sneak a UEFA Cup place.
"Obviously we will have to wait and see. So while things are disappointing and frustrating, it's not all bad.
"It would be nice if there were more competition for places. I think that would help to raise everybody's standards,” continued Mills.
"But we’ve got what we’ve got. It's a small squad and we have had some horrific injuries but that's football and you have to get on with it."
