Could Man City be relegated from the Premier League for FFP breaches?

Arsenal's slip-up at Goodison Park handed Manchester City a golden opportunity to pounce. The only problem: it was Tottenham away.

Their woes perpetuated in Spurs' fancy new amphitheatre on Sunday afternoon as a record-breaking Harry Kane goal handed the hosts a 1-0 win. Pep Guardiola's side were once again sub-par, meaning the margin between themselves and the Gunners at the summit remains five points.

However, there's a very real possibility that their current five-point deficit could become a whole lot more in the not-so-distant future. The big breaking news on Monday morning involves the Citizens, who have been charged by the Premier League with breaking financial rules.

The club's misdoings could have serious ramifications.

What are Man City alleged to have done?

The club has been charged with multiple alleged breaches of the Premier League’s Financial Fair Play regulations following a four-year investigation.

The breaches are said to have occurred between 2009/10 until 2017/18, with allegations of breaching regulations surrounding player and manager contracts and the remuneration declared in their financial accounts. The club also failed to co-operate with the investigation.

A statement from the Premier League read: "The members of the Commission will be appointed by the independent Chair of the Premier League Judicial Panel.

"The proceedings before the Commission will, in accordance with Premier League Rule W.82, be confidential and heard in private. Under Premier League Rule W.82.2, the Commission's final award will be published on the Premier League's website.

"This confirmation is made in accordance with Premier League Rule W.82.1. The Premier League will be making no further comment in respect of this matter until further notice."

How could Man City be punished?

It's far too early to tell, but City's punishment could be severe. A hefty fine is almost certain, with a points deduction and transfer ban both being on the table.

Expulsion from the Premier League has also been reported as a possibility, as has City having their league titles rescinded. So yes, it's serious.
