Speculation had been mounting since Keegan met last week with chairman David Bernstein to discuss potential transfer funds.

Keegan, who walked out on Newcastle in similar circumstances, refused to comment on the outcome of that meeting with the City board.

However, Chief Operating Officer, Chris Bird denied that the outcome of that meeting had led to Keegan handing in his resignation: "I can unequivocally deny that Kevin Keegan has resigned from Manchester City," he stressed.

"Once again the rumour mill has been in full swing, but there is absolutely no substance to this speculation."

"We met with Kevin last week and like the fans and the board of the club our manager is intent on City moving forward. We are all looking at that as our aim."
