City set for new influx

“Last summer we lost Shaun Wright-Phillips, Steve McManaman, Paul Bosvelt and Jon Macken from our senior squad, a goalkeeper in Kevin Ellegaard and a few other young lads as well,” Pearce told PA Sport.

“Since then, we have brought in Andy Cole, Darius Vassell and Tuomas Haapala.

“By my reckoning, there is still a deficit of players from the summer so three or four signings would be a reasonable number to supplement the squad we already have.

“But what I will not do is bring in someone just because they are a big name," added the City boss.

"Last summer, when the window was closing, I was being offered players left, right and centre but if they are no better than I already have, they can stay where they are.”

The most likely arrival so far is Espanyol midfielder Albert Riera. Talks are already well advanced with the 23-year-old Spaniard about a loan deal, with the option of a permanent move in the summer.

Pearce must think highly of Riera, who has already spent 2 years abroad with French side Bordeaux, as he is thought to have agreed a fee of £3.8m for a summer move.
