Boss backs Blues defender

Although the crucial first goal deflected off Dunne before bobbling past David James, Wayne Rooney will still be credited with the goal.

However the second goal, which sealed the win for United, will certainly go down as an own goal.

It was a clear mistake by Dunne as he failed to block Rooney’s cross properly, and the ball sailed over James and in off the far post.

Yet Keegan rightfully acknowledged Dunne’s contribution earlier in the game.

Dunne, one of City’s most consistent performers this season, successfully shackled Rooney with his tight marking, and Rooney’s frustration showed in the 38th minute when he was booked for a lunging foul on Dunne after the bulky defender had dispossessed him.

"It was pretty cruel for Richard," claimed Keegan after the 2-0 defeat.

"He couldn't do much about either of them really but it was a shame because otherwise he was outstanding."
