Benjamin Mendy pleads not guilty to additional rape charge

Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy has pleaded not guilty to a further count of rape.

The 28-year-old had previously been charged with seven rapes, one count of sexual assault and one count of attempted rape, all of which he has denied.

He entered a not guilty plea at a hearing ahead of his trial at Chester Crown Court, which is due to begin on Monday and is expected to last more than three months.

Mendy is set to stand trial alongside co-defendant Louis Saha Matturie, who is accused of 12 offences - alleged to have taken place between July 2012 and August 2021 - which include eight rapes and four counts of sexual assault relating to eight women.

The French international, who has made 50 appearances in the Premier League, was suspended by Manchester City in August last year following his initial arrest and was released on bail in January this year.
