Benjamin Mendy charged with two additional counts of rape

Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy has been charged with two additional counts of rape, the Crown Prosecution Service has confirmed.

Mendy had already been charged with four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault back in August, with City suspending the player soon after.

The 27-year-old is currently on remand at HMP Altcourse in Liverpool and he has been denied bail on three occasions since the initial charges were filed. He will appear at Stockport Magistrates' Court on 17 November.

Mendy joined City for £52m back in 2017 and has since made 50 Premier League appearances for the club. In 2018 he was part of the France side that won the World Cup in Brazil.

He last featured for City during their 1-0 defeat to Tottenham on 15 August.

Shortly after suspending the player, the club released a statement which read: "Manchester City can confirm that following his being charged by police today, Benjamin Mendy has been suspended pending an investigation.

"The matter is subject to a legal process and the club is therefore unable to make further comment until that process is complete."
