Balotelli joined the rest of the Italy team in meeting the country's president -- an honorary position -- at the seat of government in Rome.

Napolitano had earlier claimed that he felt all children born in Italy should be given Italian citizenship regardless of where their parents are from.

Balotelli was born in Palermo to Ghanaian parents but could not become an Italian citizen until he turned 18, even though he was already representing Italy at youth level in football.

"I was touched by those words. He was talking about my story, it was exactly like that," said Balotelli.

"It was amazing that in such intense days full of commitment that Napolitano met with us and we're his number one fans."
