Atlético Madrid Want Mauricio Pochettino as Next Manager But Face Major Stumbling Block

Atlético Madrid are eyeing Mauricio Pochettino as they consider long-term replacements for manager Diego Simeone, as his struggles continue in the Spanish capital.

The former Tottenham Hotspur boss has been without a job for almost three months after leaving north London in November, being replaced by José Mourinho.

Pochettino has already revealed that his next job will either be in England or Spain, and The Telegraph reports La Liga giants Atlético Madrid want the Argentine to become their next manager - with Simeone having just two years left on his contract.

It's early long-term planning from sporting director Andrea Berta, who emerged as a potential target for Manchester United behind the scenes around the same time Pochettino was being linked with a move to Old Trafford.

It won't be a straightforward move for Atléti, however, as the 47-year-old has also been a target for city rivals Real Madrid for a number of years. On top of that, The Telegraph insists Pochettino would actually prefer a return to management in the Premier League.

Manchester United are unsurprisingly mentioned as a potential destination for Pochettino, although Manchester City would also look to appoint the Argentine manager at the end of Pep Guardiola's contract at Etihad Stadium.

Even Borussia Dortmund are listed among the club who are eager to appoint Pochettino, although he'd likely have to improve his German somewhat before he's considered for a job in the Bundesliga.

Pochettino has already ruled out a move to Barcelona at any point in his career due to his ties with Espanyol, while for the same reason it's also unlikely he'll ever take over at Arsenal.

If the former Tottenham boss did take charge at Atlético Madrid, Pochettino would have the chance to work alongside Kieran Trippier.

In 114 appearances under Pochettino, Trippier scored two goals and picked up 24 assists across all competitions.
