Time for Keegan to remember City's forgotten men

Us City fans have experienced many false dawns – abandoning reason to believe the hype, only to come crashing back down to earth – yet our optimism never wanes. This is no catastrophe, merely a wake-up call.

Keegan’s signings aren’t the international stars to guide us into the promised land. I believe the City boss has improved the squad once more and the club continues to develop under his guidance. However, it seems too many of the new signings have come on the proviso of playing on European jaunts and in a flash new stadium.

I hope the international break has given Keegan time to come to the conclusion that rotating his new buys will not work. What we need is some trustee performers who remember life at Maine Road, who know something about the club and what it means to us. With the departures of Goater and Horlock few remain, but Keegan should think about bringing them in to mix with the best of the new.

The most notable of those forgotten men is – and I must thank a reader for reminding me – Eyal Berkovic. Although he handed in a transfer request during the summer, he has long since apologised yet remains frozen out of the picture. The longer this continues the worse the situation gets.

Eyal’s intelligence and vision was often lost on his team-mates last season. But now, not only would he unlock the potential of McManaman and Sinclair but think of how he would compliment the steel of Bosvelt.

The Dutchman has added power and discipline to the City midfield but this is sadly lacking from centre-defence of late. His compatriot, Gerard Wiekens, has rarely let City down when called upon, especially in last year’s 3-1 derby win. He's obviously not the long term solution but he'd be a sensible addition to help the new players gain some sort of consistency in the immediate future.

And finally, if Seaman’s poor form continues then Nicky Weaver might be worth a go between the sticks after battling back to full fitness. Seaman is gifting opponents goals at present and surely Weaver can do no worse. I’m sure if Keegan showed some belief in him after his injury ordeal it would boost his game no end.

The choice is yours Kevin. But remember, keep switching your new recruits and it will be your head on the block when their European adventure comes to an end and they can’t stomach an ugly mid-table dogfight.
