Thaksin should keep trap shut

The City owner spoke to reporters while attending a business conference in Dubai, although I think it was what he didn't say that was more worrying.

"There are no plans at the moment," he said. "We will evaluate at the end of the season.

"I'm not happy with the performance of the club in the second half of the season. We will look at it at the end of the season and assess the club and the people involved."

I'm sure every single owner/chairman will be reviewing and evaluating their manager's performance at the end of the season so there's nothing sensational there.

And although it was a little surprising to see Thaksin admit he wasn't happy with City's recent form, that view is shared by just about every City fan. After all, we've won just 4 of our 16 league games since Christmas!

What concerned me was not so much what Thaksin actually said but that he passed up on an opportunity to give Sven his full backing.

After spending the first half of the season in the top four, City's slump has been disappointing for the fans too, but that doesn't mean we want to see Sven move on because, let's be honest, he was exceeding expectations by getting us up there to begin with.

We need just 1 more point from the final 4 games to record our best-ever Premier League points tally so Sven is certainly taking the club in the right direction.

Thaksin may have expected more given how much of his cash Eriksson has spent, but he must realise that football isn't as straightforward as business.

Thaksin showed how much he knows about football when he suggested what transfer targets we might have this summer.

"We need some defenders and midfielders - midfielders are the key," he added. "We have some good players but we need more."

How about we get some more goalkeepers as well eh, Thaksin??

Short of bringing in Ronaldinho and a recognised right midfielder, I don't think any major reinforcements are needed in defence or midfield. The priority must surely be getting in some reliable goalscorers because Benjani's not getting the job done and the rest just aren't up to scratch.

Injuries have left us a bit short in defence and midfield at times this season and Eriksson should maybe bring in better cover than Sun Jihai.

But otherwise he has plenty of flexible players at his disposal who provide good cover, such as Michael Ball, Nedum Onuoha and Stephen Ireland, along with Elano and Vedran Corluka, who he brought in himself.

Thaksin was expected to be back over here for Sunday's home game against Portsmouth but is now not expected until next week's visit of Fulham. It will be interesting to see what reception he gets.

Although I don't think he said that much, perhaps it's better if he just says nothing at all. He must know by now that everything he says will get this kind of reaction from the media, and if it continues it could start to unsettle the club and undermine the many good things that are happening at City.

We don't want it to develop into the soap opera that is going on at Liverpool!
