Hughes must solve striker dilemma

Manager Mark Hughes has failed to act this week after Valeri Bojinov was injured in the warm-up for last week's 4-2 defeat at Villa.

With Benjani and Darius Vassell already out and Jo not yet back from the Olympics, City are left with just two young forwards to choose from as they attempt to bounce back from last week's disappointing opener.

As promising as they may be, Evans and Sturridge are raw and inexperienced, and should not be burdened with leading the line for the Blues at such a crucial stage in the season.

I think Vincent Kompany is a sound acquisition but he's a defender, and although Hughes insists he has worked right upto the transfer deadline to bring players in before, we could already be in dire straits.

By that point we may have been kncked out of Europe and lost our opening 3 games of the league campaign.

Jo may be back in time to feature in next week's crucial UEFA Cup game in Denmark, and although the Brazilian youngster cost £19m, we shouldn't expect too much from him soon as he has no experience of English football.

Benjani and Vassell may both be back inside 2 months but Hughes should have acted before Boinov's injury. It was clear that one more injury would leave us desperately short up front.

Although the ex-Blackburn boss did approach his former club with a £12m bid for Roque Sanata Cruz, that was way too low for a striker who has proven himself in the Premier League.

Santa Cruz would fit the bill and if Hughes wants to get him in, he must go back with a serious offer of at least £15m. After all, he was one of the most prolific strikers in the Premier League last season.
