Comment: Keegan leaves City

At this stage, full details are yet to emerge, so I can't say whether he has walked or was pushed. But in any case, I'm disgusted.

If he's walked, he's gone back on his word and left us at a terrible time, although I feel his position was beginning to become untenable. I believe the media, helped by Keegan's very own goalkeeper, have pushed him out.

They've put unnecessary pressure on Keegan when he has made his intentions perfectly clear.

Initially, I wasn't sure he should have announced last year that he would not sign a new contract when his current deal expired at the end of next season. However, that should have avoided him having to fend off questions now about whether he'd extend his deal beyond the summer of 2006.

Thanks to David James that's not been the case, after he sparked a media furore by asking the club/Keegan to confirm what was going to happen beyond then.

In a refreshing piece of honesty and openness in football, Keegan reiterated his plans but still the specualtion didn't stop.

It seems the rumour-mongers were intent on getting Keegan out sooner rather than later, and whether Keegan was sacked or has resigned, they now have their wish.

If the club have wielded the axe then it's a throwback to the club's shambolic administration of the 80s and 90s. I thought we had moved on since then, but if he has been sacked, then clearly I was wrong.

Now rather than having over a year to prepare for a smooth transition, we are left with an aimless end to the season and just a few months to try to find a suitable successor.

Reports have so far suggested that City's erratic form has led to their manager's departure, but if he was going to go for poor performances then surely he had to go last season.

Keegan has helped City recover from that forgettable campaign, and established us as a Premiership club - have people also forgotten what we were when he took over?

City's repeated failure to climb into the European places this season has been disappointing, but Keegan's the one who's been trying to push us forward and build the club's expectations - not the board. It seems as long as we're in the Premiership they're happy, but Keegan showed us we can achieve more.

Well, now I'm pretty sure we won't for a good while yet. We might if we can blag Martin O'Neill into taking the job. However, I doubt we will if Gordon Strachan's the man - for me, he'll be just another Alan Ball. Can't wait!
