Wolves Set Possession Record Against Pep Guardiola as Nuno's Side Complete Double Over City

Wolverhampton Wanderers fought back from two goals down to beat the ten men of Manchester City on Friday evening in a thrilling encounter at Molineux that all but ended the Premier League holders' title defence.

City goalkeeper Ederson was shown a red card after just 12 minutes, but the visitors soon moved into the lead through Raheem Sterling. The Englishman doubled his side's lead five minutes into the second half to put them firmly in the driving seat.

However, an outstanding second half display saw Wolves fight back, with Raul Jimenez scoring the equaliser eight minutes from time. Nuno Espirito Santo's men went on to grab all three points, with Matt Doherty scoring an 89th-minute winner.

This was ​City's fifth defeat of the season, with the team now 14 points behind runaway leaders Liverpool, who also have a game in hand. 

While the Sky Blues were forced to play with ten men for the majority of the game, it was a hugely impressive display by ​Wolves to come back from two goals down to take all three points. 

In fact, Guardiola's men managed just 37.8% possession on Friday night. This is the lowest figure recorded by a side managed by Guardiola in top-flight history. 


Of course, the result means Nuno's men have won both clashes against the Citizens in the Premier League in 2019/20, having taken all three points at the Etihad Stadium earlier in the season.

As a result, Wolves are just the second team to complete a league double against a team managed by Guardiola after Antonio Conte’s Chelsea in 2016/17.


That season, the Blues ran out 3-1 winners away from home before an Eden Hazard double helped secure all three points in the reverse fixture. 


Following the defeat to Wolves, Guardiola ​conceded that City's Premier League title defence was over, claiming that ​Liverpool's advantage was too big. Nonetheless, he will be keen to see his side get back to winning ways as they prepare to take on high-flying Sheffield United on Sunday.
