Wayne Rooney has said he does not think Cristiano Ronaldo would tarnish his Manchester United legacy by making a move to fierce rivals Manchester City.
Ronaldo is pushing for his Juventus departure before the close of the transfer window with Paris Saint-Germain or City his only likely destinations.
90min understands that his agent, Jorge Mendes, is trying desperately to convince the latter to strike a deal and the forward would even be willing to take a significant wage cut to facilitate a move.
The transfer would be controversial with Ronaldo enjoying a storied five-year spell at Old Trafford at the beginning of his career. During his time with the club he made just shy of 300 appearances, scoring 118 goals and helping his side to three Premier League titles and a Champions League triumph in 2008.
Rooney, now Derby County manager, was alongside him during this incredible era and warned his former teammate against a move to City.
“If you’re asking me if I think it’s possible then I have major doubts that it is a possibility. Cristiano has got a great legacy at United. I don’t think he’s going to move somewhere for financial reasons,” he said, as quoted by the Daily Mail.
Rooney went on to claim that Ronaldo was more likely to move to PSG than City. This particular deal seems unlikely, though. Despite the club being in talks to sell Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid, they are not interested in signing the legendary forward, turning down the chance to enter talks earlier this week.
Ronaldo is personally keen on departing Turin and the club would sanction his departure. His arrival has not helped Juventus break their Champions League hoodoo and they barely made the top four last season. Ronaldo is currently earning £900,000-per-week at the Serie A club.
