Phil Foden named 2021/22 Premier League Young Player of the Season

Phil Foden has been named the Premier League Young Player of the Season for the second consecutive season.

The England ace has enjoyed a stellar 2021/22 campaign at the Etihad, recording nine goals and five assists in the Premier League to help City close in on another title.

The 21-year-old has played in a number of roles this season, playing everywhere across the front line as well as dropping back into midfield, and his consistency has seen him win the award ahead of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Conor Gallagher, Tyrick Mitchell, Mason Mount, Aaron Ramsdale, Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka - the seven other players shortlisted.

“I am very proud to have won this award for a second season in a row," Foden said of his win. “There are so many talented young players in the Premier League this season and it is a real honour to win it again.

“I have been really happy with my performances this season and it has been great to contribute to this team in what will hopefully be another successful year for us all.

“I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to my development this season.”

Speaking in early May, City manager Pep Guardiola praised Foden's ability to play in a number of different roles and spoke enthusiastically about how much he could still improve - even mentioning his talent in the same breadth as Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva.

"For Phil, responsibility is not a problem. Since day one going to bigger stages, bigger scenarios and important games, it's not a problem (for him). He loves to play.

"He can play in all five positions up front: winger on both sides, striker through the middle and in the pockets like an attacking midfielder.

"In the Academy when I started to see him at 16/17-years-old when I arrived here, he played in a position like Kevin De Bruyne and wow, he played really good but all the actions are so, so quick.

"You remember David Silva, sometimes he slowed the rhythm to increase the rhythm, (but Phil's) rhythm is always high.

"It's good as he is so aggressive and we need it but sometimes he needs a little bit, but that is a question of time. He can do it no problem, it's just a question of time."
