France coach Jacques Santini issued a late call for Anelka when Lyon striker Sidney Govou suffered a left knee injury in his club's game against Bordeaux on Saturday.

However, Anelka has snubbed the offer claiming he did not have the full support of the France coach.

"I met the coach last week when we played Manchester United and I was not convinced by what he said. He told me that he had kept players ahead of me in the squad because he knew them better," Anelka said in L'Equipe.

"I have a feeling that this choice is being in a way forced upon the coach, while I need to be accepted by all the squad's members to feel at ease. I currently do not sense people truly want to pick me.

"The coach asked me to show that I wanted to wear the France team shirt and I tried to do so until today. On his side, it showed that he did not want to give me my chance. This is why I turned down the selection."
