Sergio Agüero famously claimed that he was willing to stay at Manchester City until they finally won the Champions League, but the club may have handed the Argentine a get-out-of-jail card from this potential lifetime commitment.
The Citizens were rocked in February when UEFA slapped them with a two-year ban from all European competition, after allegedly breaking the Financial Fair Play rules and failing to co-operate with the subsequent investigation.
City have fervently denied any accusations of wrongdoing - and have appealed the decision - and they are confident that the majority of their squad will stick around at the Etihad Stadium for the coming years.
That is, except for record goalscorer Agüero. The Sun reports that the Premier League champions are prepared to allow the 31-year-old to leave the club in the summer, should they fail to overturn their lengthy ban from Europe.
Agüero's contract expires at the end of next season, and given his days at the top level may be numbered due to his advancing years, the Argentina international might fancy one last crack at lifting the coveted Champions League elsewhere.
City are said to be 'sympathetic' towards the striker's current situation, and although he is not desperate to leave the Etihad, they are willing to let him walk away from the club on good terms, after giving nine years of dedicated service.
Agüero has been a mainstay in the Citizens' side since his arrival from Atletico Madrid in 2011, and the Argentina international has been at the heart of the club's rise to stardom over the past decade.
The former Atleti man has won every domestic competition on offer with City, and he scored possibly the most important goal in the club's history on the final day of the 2011/12 campaign, winning them their first ever Premier League title.
It's hard to imagine a life after 'Agüerooooo' for the blue side of Manchester, but the time may come soon rather than later for a change in striking direction.
