Man Utd 0-2 Man City: Player ratings as Cityzens dominate Manchester derby

An Eric Bailly own goal and Bernardo Silva's strike before half-time gave Manchester City a 2-0 win over city rivals United at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

Both sides had opportunities in front of goal in the early stages, although it was City who broke the deadlock. Just seven minutes into proceedings, the early pressure told as Joao Cancelo's low driven cross was turned into his own net by Bailly.

Pep Guardiola's men knocked on the door throughout the first half, and eventually doubled their advantage just before the interval. Cancelo's in-swinging cross drifted through the area without any reaction from the United back line, and Bernardo Silva swooped in at the far post to poke home from a narrow angle.

United reacted following the break, although City soon regained control of the match and never looked like relinquishing their grip on the derby. Ilkay Gundogan, Phil Foden and John Stones all had decent opportunities of adding a third, but Guardiola's side were more than happy to settle for a 2-0 win.

The victory moves the Cityzens onto 23 points, six clear of United. Now, let's see how the players rated in the derby...

Manchester United player ratings

1. Goalkeeper & Defenders

David De Gea (GK) - 6/10 - Had no chance with the first and pulled out a few exceptional saves in the first half - the hosts could've been four or five down by the break - but really should have kept Silva's strike out.

Eric Bailly (CB) - 5/10 - Really poor positionally and rash for the opening goal. Drove out of defence nicely at times, but was hooked off at half-time as United changed shape.

Victor Lindelof (CB) - 5/10 - Registered a few clearances but was generally slow to react to danger in his own penalty area.

Harry Maguire (CB) - 5/10 - Generally looked strong aerially and held firm to threaded balls in the channel. Didn't react to Cancelo's cross for the second, however.

2. Wing-backs & midfielders

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (RWB) - 2/10 - Was absolutely shocking, letting runners through at will, failing to press adequately and just not doing the basics right.

Scott McTominay (CM) - 5/10 - Managed to break up play and disrupt City's flow occasionally, but was predictably overrun and dominated in the centre.

Fred (CM) - 5/10 - Tenacious and industrious, but simply had no chance of getting a grip in midfield with City's movement and overloads.

Bruno Fernandes (CM) - 4/10 - So weak defensively - notably failing to close down Cancelo as he crossed for the opener. Never got a hold of the game and failed to influence proceedings with his usual creativity.

Luke Shaw (LWB) - 3/10 - Really poor defending to let the ball sail past him with Silva behind him in the build up to City's second. Never looked at the races.

3. Forwards

Mason Greenwood (ST) - 5/10 - Sporadically brighter when moved out wide for the second half, looking more comfortable running directly at his opposition and City's box, although couldn't find a decisive moment.

Cristiano Ronaldo (ST) - 5/10 - Forced Ederson into a sharp save with a well-struck volley in the first half. Really not much more to report, however.

4. Substitutes

Jadon Sancho (LW) - 5/10 - Helped widen United's shape and assert some sort of control but that was simply because of his position, not anything he did.

Marcus Rashford (RW) - 5/10

5. Goalkeeper & defenders

Ederson (GK) - 6/10 - Forced into a good stop from Ronaldo in the first half, but not really tested otherwise.

Kyle Walker (RB) - 7/10 - Very resistant to United's occasionally promising attempts at counter-attacking, always staying alert and making five ball recoveries.

John Stones (CB) - 6/10 - Didn't have all that much to do defensively but was progressive and measured on the front foot, producing some nice switch of plays to Cancelo in particular.

Ruben Dias (CB) - 6/10 - Typically composed on the back foot, looking solid and unphased in the face of danger.

Joao Cancelo (LB) - 8/10 - Constantly looked dangerous when getting forward and attempting to spread play from left-back, forcing the early opener with a good cross and creating the second with a delicious delivery.

6. Midfielders

Rodri (DM) - 6/10 - Characteristically neat and tidy at the heart of the side. Not really tasked with too much screening - courtesy of City's high press and United's ineptitude - and kept things efficient with his passing.

Kevin De Bruyne (CM) - 7/10 - Continuously dropped wide or deep to pull United's shape and create space. Intelligent play and managed to dig out a few balls that threatened the hosts, providing four key passes.

Ilkay Gundogan (CM) - 6/10 - Maintained a very high position and proved elusive to his opposition, either holding off and occupying space between the lines or making darts in behind the back line.

7. Forwards

Gabriel Jesus (RW) - 7/10 - Great work rate, pressing Shaw to pin the full-back and maintain the pressure. Was impactful in advanced areas, producing three key passes although really should have got a goal, instead seeing his effort saved by De Gea.

Bernardo Silva (ST) - 8/10 - Oozing confidence. His movement, positional awareness, dribbling and playmaking were all top drawer at Old Trafford - and he got his reward with a well-taken goal.

Phil Foden (LW) - 6/10 - So silky with the ball at his feet, often just running rings around his defender. His spark waned somewhat after the interval and should have killed the game late on, scraping the post.
