Manchester City could reward Joao Cancelo with a new contract in the coming months, even though his current deal at the Etihad Stadium doesn’t expire until the summer of 2025.
Despite a tough debut season at City that was interrupted by the start of the coronavirus pandemic, Cancelo has established himself as one of the best full-backs in the world – whether playing on the right or left – now that he is in his third year at the club.
The Portuguese has been one of the Premier League’s standout players of 2021/22, earning widespread praise, and City have been tipped to take action to secure his long-term future.
Fabrizio Romano reports that talks over a fresh contract are expected to begin in the next few months, with the offer of a new deal to come as part of those discussions.
New and improved terms would reflect Cancelo’s increasing status in the City squad.
City invested around £60m to sign Cancelo from Juventus in 2019, paying over £27m in cash and sending Danilo to Turin as part of the agreement. He only started 13 Premier League games in that first season and was more often used in the Champions League.
But a breakthrough for Cancelo came last season when his versatility was a tremendous asset in City’s Premier League title win, starting 27 league games and a further 12 in other competitions.
This season, Cancelo has been undroppdable for Pep Guardiola, starting every Premier League game so far and racking up more minutes in the competition than any other City player.
