"They have certainly made a difference to training that this season seems to have gone up a notch in terms of quality," believes Fazackerley. "The mere fact that several top quality new faces have arrived has spurred everyone on."

One player who has certainly upped a gear is blossoming youngster, Joey Barton. He has been praised recently by both U21's manager, David Platt, and Kevin Keegan for his attitude and performance in training.

Fazackerley added: "Each of them is able to look around and know instantly that the competition for places is enormous and that can only be good for them and for Manchester City.

"Despite that competition, however, the spirit among the squad is as good as I have known it here. The players are united in the common purpose of reaching the top six of the Premiership and they want to work for one another."

This opinion echoed Nicolas Anelka's comments yesterday on team spirit and the team's goal for the season.

Fazackerley went on to say, "It is no accident that the squad is gelling so well because these days before a transfer is made you always check on what kind of person, as well as player, you are getting."
