Caroline Weir Signs New Contract With Manchester City Women Until 2022

Manchester City Women have confirmed that midfielder Caroline has signed a contract with the club that will keep her at the Etihad Campus for another two years until at least 2022.

Weir only joined City from Liverpool in 2018 and has previously also played in the WSL for Bristol Academy and Arsenal since moving to England from Scotland. She follows Steph Houghton in committing her future to the club after the captain agreed a new deal last week.

“I’m delighted to have signed a new contract. I’ve had a really enjoyable first 18 months and I’m really pleased to have extended my stay here,” Weir told City’s official website.

“It was definitely an easy decision. I would like to think I’ve improved a lot. It’s a great club and it really tests you, taking you out of your comfort zone. There’s a pressure to improve and a lot of expectation to win every game and win trophies, which has improved my mindset.”

Weir also praised City’s record for equality and treating female players as ‘as ultimate professionals’. She added that she ‘loves’ Manchester and feels at home in the area.

Weir has played 19 games in all competitions for City so far this season, scoring six times. On the opening day of this season, the 24-year-old scored a long range stunner in a Manchester derby against Manchester United in front of a WSL record crowd at the Etihad Stadium.

City’s next game is a crucial top of the table clash with reigning champions Arsenal at home, with the Gunners having knocked them out of the Continental Cup just a few days ago.

The game will be manager Nick Cushing’s last in charge before he takes up a new role as part of the coaching staff at New York City ahead of the upcoming 2020 MLS season.
