Boss backs Macca after handing him start

Paul Bosvelt's suspension meant that Keegan had to bring someone else in, and after announcing that Macca would be the man, he asked the City fans to get behind the struggling former England international.

An Achilles problem has hampered his chances of making an impression this season, and even when he had recovered fitness, he was kept on the bench by the consistent performances of Joey Barton and Bosvelt in midfield.

But Macca has been handed the opportunity to win over the fans against our city rivals - possibly the last opportunity he'll get.

"We lose Paul Bosvelt through suspension and I'm going to fetch Steve into the team," Keegan told the official City website.

"I would like to see the City fans get right behind him," he added. "There have been a couple of times when he has come on as a sub recently and they haven't reacted very well.

"I'm not telling supporters how to get behind or how to support the team. But I think the team needs everyone in a Blue shirt - our supporters in other words - to get behind the team.

"That team will include Steve McManaman and he is a very, very good player."
